The best para table tennis stars in Africa will converge in Agadir, Morocco for the 1st Morocco Open International Para Table Tennis Championships and African Para Table Tennis Championships, which serves as qualifiers for the 2016 Rio Paralympics Games in Brazil.

According to the President, Africa Table Tennis Federation (ATTF), Khaled El-Salhy, top nations such as Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa and Algeria have confirmed their participation in the tournament scheduled for October 3 to 11, 2015.

As a record entries competition, eight countries are expected to jostle for honours at the championship.

“We are expecting teams from Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Libya, Nigeria, Morocco, Sierra Leone and – South Africa, which is about eight countries which is quite good level of participation in Para African events. There will be the 1st Morocco Open International Para TT Championships during 3-6 October (Factor 20) followed by our 2015 African Para TT Championships during 7-11 October (Factor 50), both in Agadir – Morocco,” the ATTF boss said.

He however, said: “It seems that the main African top teams like Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa are not interested to take part in the first event as they will come only for the African event in order to focus on making it to Rio Paralympics as well as to prepare their top players for the main event.”

“The 2015 African PTT Championships is the main qualifying event for 2016 Rio Paralympic Games as the winner of each single event in all classes will qualify directly to Rio, then by the end of the year more players could also qualify by rating/ranking,” he added.
