The unseeded pair of Li Yuheng and Jianan Wang defied all odds to emerge as champion in the table tennis mixed doubles event of the 2015 African Games holding in Brazzaville.

  Spurred by the home support, the Chinese imports failed to lose a game in their matches to set up a final match against Nigeria’s duo of Olufunke Oshonaike and Ojo Onaolapo.

  Having edged out number seed, Egypt’s Omar Assar and Dina Meshref, the Congolese flabearers thrilled the home fans with their mesmerizing skills to the admiration of the fans at the Revolution Hall, venue of the competition.

 Their good run reached climax in the final when they dismissed the Nigerians 3-0 to give the home team it first gold medal in the table tennis event.

  An elated Yuheng admitted, “It was not an easy game because devoted 200 percent to the match as each game was very hard. Our opponents are also strong. I think this victory is a breakthrough for us and it will surely prepare us well for other events.”

After the surprising loss to the Congolese, Egypt’s Omar Assar said: “I don’t think anything went wrong in the match because it was a tough game after playing the semifinal was took a lot from us. They are best couples no doubt about this because we could not play well as we have used all our energy during the quarterfinal match. We played tough matches against Nigeria and Congo Brazzaville and these affected our performance in the semifinal. I believe I had done well so far and I will remain focus in my performance from the beginning of subsequent events”
