The African Games is a quadrennial sports fiesta and table tennis is one of the exciting sports that add glamour to the African version of the Olympic Games.

At the 2015 edition, Ghana claimed a golden bronze in the men’s team event which was the first in the last two decades for the West African and to ensure they are not adding to the numbers at the 2019 edition in Morocco, the Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) is hoping to select the best hands for the former God Coast nation.

Also not to deny some of the youngsters that dazzled at the African Junior and Cadet Championship in April the chance, some of the juniors have been called up to be part of the three-stage trials holding at the D. G. Hathiramani Hall of the Accra Sports Stadium under the supervision of the National Chief Coach Anthony Owusu Ansah.

According to the media officer of GTTA, Nathaniel Kwesi Somuah, 49 players made up of 30 men and 19 women are expected to battle for shirts.

Topping the list include regular players such as Derek Abrefa, Felix Lartey, Bernard Joe Sam and Emmanuel Commey who formed the team that won Bronze medal at the 2015 edition of the African Games in Congo Brazzaville.

The juniors that headlined the list are left-handed penholder Joseph Amissah, Augustine Baidoo, Desmond Osei, Samuel Hagan, Godwin Nyarko Aseku and Daniel Tawiah.

According to the media officer, the trials would afford the players to test their might against the established stars as well as get the chance of breaking into the senior national team.

The female continent is led by current Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) player of the year and world championships participant Celia Baah-Danso, while others are experienced Cynthia Kwabi, Eva Adom-Amankwaa, Hilda Asare and Eva Ampah.

Other junior stars that made the list for the trials are Augustina Baidoo, Millicent Ankude, Matilda Fodu, and Diana Opoku for their tremendous improvement in 2019.

The surprise call up to the trials is 10-year-old Emmanuella Yaa Kyere who is ranked 411 in the ITTF Cadet category..
According to GTTA, the trials will be in three (3) stages with the first stage taking place from July 3 to 5, the second stage holds on July 10 to 13 while the final stage will take place on July 17 to 18.
