2018 ITTF Africa Champion, Aruna Quadri measured up again to his national rating as the table tennis star retains the Sportsman of the year at the 2018 Nigerian Sports Award (NSA) held on Friday November 16 at Eko Hotel and Suites in the Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, Lagos.

Aruna Quadri who won the 2017 edition was adjudged Nigeria’s Sportsman of the Year ahead of Nigeria’s national football team assistant captain, Ahmed Musa and national basketball team captain, Ike Diogu.

At the glamorous award gala, the ITTF Nigeria Open champion was represented by the Vice President, ITTF Africa Western Region, Wahid Enitan Oshodi.

An excited Aruna Quadri said after being named the Sportsman of the Year that it would spur him on to work harder.

“I am so excited and grateful to my fans across the globe who considered me again for this award. I must also commend the organizers of the award for keeping faith with this award which has continued to inspire Nigerian athletes to aim high in their chosen fields. I want to thank my lovely wife and children for their support and I hope this will spur me on to aim higher in the future,” Quadri said.

But the night belongs to Nigeria’s basketball team captain, Evelyn Akhator who claimed the award beating wrestler, Odunayo Adekuoroye to the Sportswoman of the Year award. Akhator was also named the basketball player of the year.

The glamorous award gala also saw Ahmed Musa emerged the football of the Year by beating his teammate Kenneth Omeruo and Super Falcons player, Rasheed Ajibade.

It was also a glorious night for the basketball community as the category dominated the medal haul, winning three award categories out of which two were won by Akhator.

The Nigerian Sports Award is the only Nigerian awards dedicated to recognizing the achievements of our sports men and women, both present and past that have done brilliantly well in the sporting world.
