Derek Abrefa has continued to grow table tennis popularity in Ghana and as a member of the national team of the West African nation, Derek Abrefa, an undergraduate of University of Cape Coast (UCC) has become a voice for table tennis in his country.

For five years, Derek Abrefa has won the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) award as the best table tennis player.

From 2010 to date, Derek Abrefa has kept the gong five times and this year would remain memorable for the 2015 African Games bronze medallist as the 2017 award was presented to him by the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo at an elaborate ceremony held at the Banquet Hall of the State House Accra on May 29, 2017.

The President also summed up the importance of sports as critical, adding that sports remain one of the ventures that have brought joy to many of the citizenries and placed Ghana on a high pedestal.

An elated Derek Abrefa described the uniqueness of the award this year, saying that, “I am so grateful and excited that the number citizen of Ghana presented the award to me and this is a rare gesture from the president to have graced the ceremony. This serves as a big motivation for me. It tells me that people are watching and it’s up to me to do my best for my country and now focus my attention on the world stage,” he said.

He, however, admitted that this feat would have been possible without the huge support from numerous corporate bodies and individuals. “I will remain grateful to the President of Ghana Table Tennis Association, Mawuko Afadzinu, whose commitment and passion for the sport has lifted the fortune of table tennis. He has lifted our game from a nowhere to somewhere now. It is currently among the first three sports disciplines recognised in Ghana now in terms of publicity.

“The support I got from the Director of Sports of Ghana Immigration Service, Samuel Ayer; Charles Tachie-Manson, who is the manager of the my club – Tesano Spinners TT Club; Jason Onyameh of Divine Travel & Tour, who has supported me while I cannot forget the support of corporate bodies like Stanbic Bank and Asky Airline for continuously supporting me over the years in my career,” he added.
