Table tennis has netted another goal as one of Africa’s most successful female table tennis stars; Olufunke Oshonaike has been named as the assistant captain of Team Nigeria to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

In a statement issued by the Special Assistant on Media to the Nigeria’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Nneka Ikem Anibeze, Chelsea Football Club of England midfielder, John Mikel Obi is the captain while Oshonaike, a six-time Olympian will assist him in Brazil.

Quoting Nigeria’s Chef-de- mission Christian Ohaa, Anibeze said Obi is one of the three over-aged players in the Nigeria’s football team to the games is making his first appearance at the Olympic Games.

“Table tennis star, Olufunke Oshonaike is the assistant team captain. This will be Oshonaike’s sixth appearance at the Olympics after she debuted at Atlanta ’96. The football team known as the Dream Team VI is expected to depart for Rio from Atlanta, United States on Friday July 29 while other athletes including the table tennis team will leave in batches on the same day.

“Mikel Obi and Olufunke Oshonaike were chosen because of their consistency, patriotism and dedication to national assignments. Mikel is a young, patriotic footballer of international status and we believe he will be a role model to the upcoming athletes while Oshonaike is experienced and is one of the oldest athletes in the team. We believe that their combined efforts will bring goodwill to TEAM NIGERIA and project the county’s image positively to the world”.
